Background: Designer of this set of stamps, Mrs. Gabriel Ellison also designed the flag of Zambia, which was adopted on 24 October 1964 and slightly modified in 1996. The green colour on the flag stands for natural resources; the red symbolizes the struggle for freedom, the black for the people of Zambia, and the orange for mineral wealth. The eagle represents the people's ability to rise above the nation's problems. G. Ellison also designed the national coat of arms and many of Zambia's stamps. On the airplanes, Zambia Airways used all four colours: green, red, black and orange (see the 12-ngwee stamp).

Gabriel Ellison (1930-2017) was a Zambian painter, sculptor, illustrator, stamp designer and writer. Gabriel Ellison was born Gabriel Ryan; she married Tony Ellison, a policeman in Lusaka. She is known for having designed Zambia's flag, the coat of arms and most of the stamps published in Zambia between the 1960s and 1990s when she was head of the Graphic Arts section at the Ministry of Information; she designed over 480 stamps for Zambia. Her murals have decorated many important buildings in Lusaka.
