Three stamps of this issue were utilized on a special souvenir card issued on the occasion of the charitable flight by hot air balloon to sponsor the SOS Children's Villages. The cancel dated 21 June 1979 (with text: PREMIER VOL POSTAL EN BALLON) shows Montgolfier’s hot-air balloon; the Montgolfier Brothers made their first manned free flight by balloon on 21 November 1783. Somalia's coat of arms (shown at upper-left corner of the card) features two leopards supporting a shield, which bears the white star of the national flag; below the shield are two crossed lances and palm fronds wrapped in a ribbon. The text in Somali language is translated as follows: 1. At the top: THE FIRST HOT AIR BALLOON (FLIGHT) PERFORMED IN SOMALIA 2. Just below the stamps at the left-side (on several lines): a. POSTCARD NUM. * 737 b. THE BALLOON IS FLOWN BY THE AIR (WIND) c. HB BEK – THAT TOOK LAUNCHED FLIGHT FROM MOGADISHU AND HEADING TO ITS DESTINATION * YAKSHIID * d. 22. DKSB PILOT HB-BEK SCHIESSER is the name of the hot air balloon flown by Pilot H. Jo Scheer between Mogadishu and Yakshiid (one of the districts of Mogadishu) on 21 June 1979 to sponsor the Children's Villages. Flown card, as shown by the blue hand-cancel: Freiballon - HB-BEK – Bordstempel (Bordstempel means board stamp). The Italian airline Alitalia was the supporter of this event. DKSB is the abbreviation for Deutsche Kinderdorfsonderballonpost. DKSB-22 is the catalogue number for the German Children Village Special Balloon Mail. SOS Children's Villages (Kinderdorf) is an independent, non-governmental international development organization which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949.
