Background: The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, following notification on 16 August 1977 of its adherence to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, became the 141st Contracting State of ICAO on 15 September 1977. North Korea commemorated the 40th anniversary of its joining ICAO in 2017 by issuing a miniature sheet with one stamp; see at the following link: Korea (DPR of) – 2017 - 40th Anniversary of Admission to ICAO.

Air Koryo is the state airline of North Korea and began as Chosonminhang Korean Airways (CAAK) in 1954 after the dissolution of SOKAO, a joint Soviet-North Korean airline formed in 1950 during the three-year war on the Korean peninsula. On 25 June 1950, war broke out when North Korea invaded South Korea; the war was brought to an end on 27 July 1953 with the signing of the Korea Armistice in Panmunjam, North Korea. CAAK took over the routes and fleet of the former SOKAO. The jet-age began in 1975 when a Tupolev Tu-134 was delivered; later, Ilyushin Il-62 jets were delivered for new long-haul direct services. The name of Air Koryo was adopted as the airline’s name in 1993. The logo of the company is a blue goose in flight, as shown on the stamps, and constitutes the central part of the mini-sheets.
