The International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA) is a non-profit federation of autonomous, nongovernmental, national general aviation organizations. The interim IAOPA came into being on 2 February 1962, when four aircraft owner and pilot groups from Australia, Canada, Philippines and South Africa joined the Aircraft Owner and Pilot Association (AOPA) of the USA to form the nucleus of a new international body. The permanent IAOPA was formally founded on 22 October 1964; its headquarters are located at Frederick, MD, U.S.A. For more than 45 years, IAOPA has represented international general aviation; general aviation and aerial work operations are all those not considered to be operated by airlines, charter operators or the military, i.e. business, sightseeing, search and rescue, training, recreational, survey, aerial ambulance and a variety of other purposes used to complete the world’s transportation system. IAOPA’s first objective is to facilitate the movement of general aviation aircraft internationally and to increase the utility of the general aviation airplanes as a means of personal and business transportation. In 2010, IAOPA represents pilots and aircraft operators in 68 countries.

On the day of its foundation, IAOPA was accorded accredited status by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). To advance the interests of general aviation internationally, IAOPA represents its membership at ICAO pertinent meetings and many of the regional meetings, working groups and panels wherein general aviation is involved. IAOPA represents the interests of general aviation in many other international organizations.
