Brazil – 24 March 1936

First Numismatic Congress

Numismatics and philately have much in common. In fact, each of these hobbies has at one time or another been described as the king of hobbies and also the hobby of kings. In addition, stamps and coins often join hands in staging joint exhibitions and bourses. It seems that the first entry of organized numismatics into the philatelic world occurred only in 1936, when the first numismatic congress was held in Săo Paulo, Brazil; the Brazilian postal authorities saw fit to issue a stamp to mark this event on 24 March 1936. It took a full 25 years before Peru made the next similar issue on 19 January 1961 in honour of the country’s first national numismatic exhibition in Lima. After that, quite a number of countries followed suit.
