THE POSTAL HISTORY OF ICAO

COCESNA - Corporación Centroamericana de Servicios de Navegación Aérea

With the rapid development of aviation in the 1950s and the entry into operation of jet-engine aircraft, the need and importance of having a technical body centralizing resources to avoid duplication in air navigation services, five countries (Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua) of Central America signed on 26 February 1960 the agreement which established an intergovernmental organization named Corporación Centroamericana de Servicios de Navegación Aéra (COCESNA, Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services). Later in 1966, Belize joined COCESNA. The Organization is located at Toncontín International Airport, Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

25th anniversary of COCESNA

As a means to achieve a complete and rational integration of aeronautical services by the Aeronautical Authorities of the Central American States, COCESNA’s objectives are to provide professional air traffic control, aeronautical telecommunications, and meteorological services so as to ensure safety of air navigation and efficient operation of air traffic services for the region. This cooperative endeavor has reduced significantly the cost of providing such services and proved successful in meeting the demand for regional development and for technological progress of aviation.

In October 1976, COCESNA was the recipient of the 11th Edward Warner Award, ICAO's highest honor. The inscribed gold medal and certificate of recognition were bestowed on COCESNA "for its contribution in the provision of efficient and coordinated services for air navigation and communications which has remarkably increased the safety of international flights in the Central American region."
