Background: Bulgaria joined the United Nations on 14 December 1955 and deposited its instrument of notification of adherence to the Chicago Convention on 8 June 1967. This miniature sheet is included within the ICAO collection due to the implicit relationship to the Organization, i.e. the design of an aircraft within a United Nations issue. It is not an airmail issue.
Coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1971–1990).
Following 1944, new times began for the Bulgarian heraldry. In the communist era, the traditional type of coat of arms was replaced by an emblem which preserved the golden lion rampant placed over a non-historically-justifiable oval azure field, but encircled by a wreath of wheat ears, folded by a tricolour band on both sides, a gear-wheel. At the top is a five-pointed yellow-bordered red star. Beneath the lion is a red band with yellow dates 681 and 1944. These dates represent important years in Bulgarian history: 1. A peace treaty with the Byzantine Empire in 681 marked the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire by Asparukh. The Bulgars gradually mixed with the local population, adopting a common language on the basis of the local Slavic dialect. 2. 1944 was the year of the liberation of Bulgaria from Nazism.
Meaning of the colors used in the Bulgarian flag. The white of the flag is said to stand for peace, love, and freedom, while green emphasizes the agricultural wealth of Bulgaria. Red is for the independence struggle and military courage. |
