THE POSTAL HISTORY OF ICAO

The 30th anniversary

Sticker distributed by ICAO for the 30th anniversary

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) celebrated its 30th anniversary on 4 April 1977. On 4 April 1947, ICAO officially came into being following ratification by 26 States of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, known as the Chicago Convention, which is the Charter of the Organization. A flag-raising ceremony was held on the plaza of the International Aviation Square, Headquarters of ICAO.

It is to be noted that several countries commemorated this anniversary with stamp issues in 1978 and even in 1979; a few samples are provided hereafter.

Turkey – 4 April 1977

The date of the postmark corresponds exactly with the 30th anniversary date.

The cachet on the upper-cover shows an early-unofficial emblem in use for some time in 1954 and 1955, with longer wings set lower on the globe than on the current emblem.

It is interesting to note that the ICAO emblem on the lower-cover follows the standards in place in 1977, contrary to the design on the upper-cover, issued at the same date by Turkey.

Error: The word Organization should be spelled with z and not s.

Barbuda – 25 May 1979

This cover seems to commemorate the 30th anniversary of ICAO; the year 1949 does not correspond to any major reference date (such as 1944, 1945 or 1947) from which ICAO anniversaries could be (and were sometimes) counted. It should have more rightly commemorated the 35th anniversary (1944-1979).
