1957: São Paulo Regional air navigation meeting
The second South American/South Atlantic Regional Air Navigation (SAM/SAT RAN) Meeting was convened by ICAO in the Parque Ibirapuera, São Paulo, Brazil, from 22 October to 16 November 1957. Prior SAM/SAT RAN meeting was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October 1951. Representatives of fifteen Contracting States and three international organizations met to reassess the operational requirements of the SAM/SAT Region in the light of the problems associated with the introduction of new types of turbine propelled and turbine jet powered aircraft as well as the increasing flow of traffic. After a four-week session, the second SAM/SAT Regional Meeting adjourned on 16 November 1957, having adopted a revised regional plan covering every aspect of air navigation in South America and over South Pacific.

Santos Dumont's Early Flyer 14-bis |
At the Bagatelle, Paris, the Brazilian constructor-pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont flew on 19 October 1906 his machine, the No 14-bis, for 197 feet (60m.) in a straight line at the height of about 10 feet to win the Archdeacon prize of FF3,000 for the first flight to achieve a sustained flight of over 25 meters; it was also the first sustained flight in Europe. The 14-bis, built of bamboo and canvas with an Antoinette engine, was designed with the steering gear and the fuselage situated in front of the wings. In 1935, the Semana da ASA (Week of the Wing) was created in Brazil to commemorate this event.
The medal (Diameter of 36mm) shown hereafter was struck on Brazilian colonial copper for the Philatelic and Numismatic Club of Santos, in relation with SANPEX stamps, i.e. Santos (city of São Paulo's state) Philatelica (philatelic) Exposicao (exhibition), to commemorate two events:
1. The ICAO SAM/SAT Regional Meeting; and
2. The inauguration of the Santos Dumont Museum, in the city of Santos.
